about
Breathe It In is a song that harkens back to the days of electric guitars, when three part harmonies flowed from the open windows of the hills of Laurel Canyon. The song takes Crosby Stills and Nash in a darker direction dwelling on the moody brooding feeling of driving down an empty pacific coast highway before the fog has burned off. It tells the story of someone struggling to deal with being away from their lover, and deeply reckoning with the fleeting nature of love and existence. You can not slow the unbending wheel of time and you certainly can’t make somebody love you; a sentiment expressed in the bridge over a bass line that would rival Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Happening Brother’. The cinematic scenes in the sparsity of the lyric let your imagination become transported and transfixed, staring out at an ocean stretched across the horizon, reaching a pinnacle when all your emotions of grief, loss, and anger are realized and propelled into space by a guitar solo David Gilmour of Pink Floyd would tip his hat to. The song was recorded with Riley Geare (unknown mortal orchestra, Caroline rose, la luz) on drums, and Adam Ditt (Balto, professor Colombo, king tree and the earth mothers) on bass. Written by Tristan Lake Leabu. All vocals and guitars where Tristan Lake Leabu. The song has a contemporary late 1960’s early 1970’s feeling. If My Morning Jacket were a band in 1971. If Crosby Stills and Nash had the mystique of Pink Floyd, and the groove of Al Green, aaand were making a record in 2022. The song takes you on a journey while remaining concise. No meandering was done here. Everything is intentional and expressive. It is longing and sentimental. It is brooding and deep. It is heavy and groovy. It will move you. Take the journey. Take it again. And take care.
lyrics
Out on the horizon
I thought I saw your ship come sailing in
A vision clear as lightning
Told me you weren’t finished following the wind
All through the night your love by your side
Eyes open wide breathe it in
Because days will go by and slowly you’ll find
Those days are behind you again
I walked out to the ocean
And a voice like yours came singing on the breeze
And it just might have been me hoping
But it looked like you were comin back to me
All through the night your love by your side
Keep your eyes open wide breathe it in
Because days will go by and slowly you’ll find
Those days far behind you again
She said my hearts like an ocean tide
I’ll be by your side when the waters high
And when the tide starts to sinking low
Hear it beating slow love I have to go
And I’m bleeding out
I’m bleeding out
Oh I’m bleeding out
And I breathe it in
but I’m bleeding now
Oh I’m bleeding out

This music is a reflection of Leabu’s hard-won musical sensibilities and his enduring love for classic deep cuts. As much as
they are vessels for heavy emotion and those hard years behind, they are even more expressions of true catharsis, fundamental optimism, and an understanding that there is so much more road ahead. ...more
